The primary goal of this study was to better understand the avenues for intercultural adaptation available to individuals living abroad. To accomplish this goal, the communication of social support on an online message board for English-speaking individuals working as language assistants in French schools on short-term contracts was examined. This study develops a deeper understanding of the structure and features of online discourse, specifically those messages considered to be "advice giving." The present study provides a closer look to an often overlooked source of support for individuals adapting to a foreign culture and provides us with a deeper understanding of how people communicate advice to one another in an online context.
