Sino-American relations are composed of a complex field of factors that have influenced both cooperation and confrontation between the Chinese and Americans. The factors that present the most obstacles are undoubtedly rooted in the Sino-American military relationship where there has been a great deal of potentially dangerous misunderstandings. Part one of this study provides an overview of the literature on Sino-American relations, Sino-American military relations, and perception within the context of those relations. Part two builds on the sparse literature that focuses on perception by further exploring how western media perceives military relations through the analysis of media articles published in the Washington Post and the New York Times between 2001 and 2017. How military relations are framed in the media is important for understanding the perceptual boundaries within which policymakers can act along the cooperative-confrontational continuum. The study concludes that the confrontational discursive approach dominating the framing of military relations is problematic for ---This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs License, which permits use and distribution in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited, the use is non-commercial and no modifications or adaptations are made.

Recent world events, ranging from international violence to elections, have propelled academics and policymakers to examine Islamic resistance movements more closely. Previous studies of such movements, in both the English and Arabic literature, has been limited to historical case studies. The lack of systematic cross-case comparisons has limited the development of generalizable propositions regarding movement mobilization. In a first effort to remedy this gap in the literature, this study examines the mobilization of Islamic resistance movements-the FIS, the PIJ, Hamas, the MNLF, the MILF and the ASG-in three different countries located in three different regions. Mobilization was examined utilizing the American and European paradigms within the social movement literature. The American paradigm emphasized the role of activists for mobilization, whereas the European paradigm emphasized identity. The central goal of the study is to answer the following: Do Islamic resistance movements share common mobilization characteristics? I am grateful to many who provided assistance and support during the arduous writing process. Special thanks go first and foremost to my dissertation committee members, Drs.
North Korea said in January 2019 that it was exploring ways to engage the human rights issue. This was a much welcomed announcement because the issue must be addressed in order for the two countries to reach a formal, comprehensive peace agreement and the lifting or easing of unilateral sanctions. This study utilizes framing as an analytical tool to examine how the North Korean human rights discourse is framed in the United States for the purpose of identifying the salient rightsbased issues covered in two traditional media outlets, namely, the Washington Post and New York Times. Next, it reframes the discourse using a coding schema based on the convergence of the human rights, human security, and non-traditional security discourses. A reframing of the discourse highlights how the universalist-particularist debate in the traditional rights-based literature masks the underlying issues of the rights problem. A combination of the traditional rights-based discourse and the masking of the issues contributes to a disconnect in the way in which North Korea has been engaged in the past. Therefore, a reframing of the discourse using the convergence of the human rights, This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.
Scholars have engaged the normative debates and contributed to the vast literature by focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of the didactic, student-centered and mixed-method approaches and their contribution to student achievement, motivation, performance and retention. Most of the studies conducted however, employ experimental and survey research methods thereby leaving qualitative case studies neglected. This is problematic because it is not possible to engage in a debate on how to implement teaching strategies and transform the classroom environment. This study qualitatively examines fifteen cases which have been taught by the author at Webster University's Thailand Campus in the Department of History, Political Science and International Relations between 2013 and 2018. Case selection was based on the teaching approach, the level of the course (1000 to 4000 level), and the temporal range. The breadth of the cases covered and the emphasis on how the strategies were implemented open the door to an academic discussion on how to transform the pedagogical approach employed. A discussion on transformation of pedagogy is important in the 21 st Century because of most primary, secondary and tertiary institutions are moving in the direction of adopting curricula and practices which are purely student-centered.
