In the recent era, various diseases have severely affected the lifestyle of individuals, especially adults. Among these, bone diseases, including Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA), have a great impact on quality of life. KOA is a knee joint problem mainly produced due to decreased Articular Cartilage between femur and tibia bones, producing severe joint pain, effusion, joint movement constraints and gait anomalies. To address these issues, this study presents a novel KOA detection at early stages using deep learning-based feature extraction and classification. Firstly, the input X-ray images are preprocessed, and then the Region of Interest (ROI) is extracted through segmentation. Secondly, features are extracted from preprocessed X-ray images containing knee joint space width using hybrid feature descriptors such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) through Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and CNN using Histogram of oriented gradient (HOG). Low-level features are computed by HOG, while texture features are computed employing the LBP descriptor. Lastly, multi-class classifiers, that is, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), are used for the classification of KOA according to the Kellgren–Lawrence (KL) system. The Kellgren–Lawrence system consists of Grade I, Grade II, Grade III, and Grade IV. Experimental evaluation is performed on various combinations of the proposed framework. The experimental results show that the HOG features descriptor provides approximately 97% accuracy for the early detection and classification of KOA for all four grades of KL.
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an eye disease that alters the blood vessels of a person suffering from diabetes. Diabetic macular edema (DME) occurs when DR affects the macula, which causes fluid accumulation in the macula. Efficient screening systems require experts to manually analyze images to recognize diseases. However, due to the challenging nature of the screening method and lack of trained human resources, devising effective screening-oriented treatment is an expensive task. Automated systems are trying to cope with these challenges; however, these methods do not generalize well to multiple diseases and real-world scenarios. To solve the aforementioned issues, we propose a new method comprising two main steps. The first involves dataset preparation and feature extraction and the other relates to improving a custom deep learning based CenterNet model trained for eye disease classification. Initially, we generate annotations for suspected samples to locate the precise region of interest, while the other part of the proposed solution trains the Center Net model over annotated images. Specifically, we use DenseNet-100 as a feature extraction method on which the one-stage detector, CenterNet, is employed to localize and classify the disease lesions. We evaluated our method over challenging datasets, namely, APTOS-2019 and IDRiD, and attained average accuracy of 97.93% and 98.10%, respectively. We also performed cross-dataset validation with benchmark EYEPACS and Diaretdb1 datasets. Both qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods due to more effective localization power of CenterNet, as it can easily recognize small lesions and deal with over-fitted training data. Our proposed framework is proficient in correctly locating and classifying disease lesions. In comparison to existing DR and DME classification approaches, our method can extract representative key points from low-intensity and noisy images and accurately classify them. Hence our approach can play an important role in automated detection and recognition of DR and DME lesions.
The brain tumor is a deadly disease that is caused by the abnormal growth of brain cells, which affects the human blood cells and nerves. Timely and precise detection of brain tumors is an important task to avoid complex and painful treatment procedures, as it can assist doctors in surgical planning. Manual brain tumor detection is a time-consuming activity and highly dependent on the availability of area experts. Therefore, it is a need of the hour to design accurate automated systems for the detection and classification of various types of brain tumors. However, the exact localization and categorization of brain tumors is a challenging job due to extensive variations in their size, position, and structure. To deal with the challenges, we have presented a novel approach, namely, DenseNet-41-based CornerNet framework. The proposed solution comprises three steps. Initially, we develop annotations to locate the exact region of interest. In the second step, a custom CornerNet with DenseNet-41 as a base network is introduced to extract the deep features from the suspected samples. In the last step, the one-stage detector CornerNet is employed to locate and classify several brain tumors. To evaluate the proposed method, we have utilized two databases, namely, the Figshare and Brain MRI datasets, and attained an average accuracy of 98.8% and 98.5%, respectively. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis show that our approach is more proficient and consistent with detecting and classifying various types of brain tumors than other latest techniques.
Glaucoma is one of the eye diseases stimulated by the fluid pressure that increases in the eyes, damaging the optic nerves and causing partial or complete vision loss. As Glaucoma appears in later stages and it is a slow disease, detailed screening and detection of the retinal images is required to avoid vision forfeiture. This study aims to detect glaucoma at early stages with the help of deep learning-based feature extraction. Retinal fundus images are utilized for the training and testing of our proposed model. In the first step, images are pre-processed, before the region of interest (ROI) is extracted employing segmentation. Then, features of the optic disc (OD) are extracted from the images containing optic cup (OC) utilizing the hybrid features descriptors, i.e., convolutional neural network (CNN), local binary patterns (LBP), histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), and speeded up robust features (SURF). Moreover, low-level features are extracted using HOG, whereas texture features are extracted using the LBP and SURF descriptors. Furthermore, high-level features are computed using CNN. Additionally, we have employed a feature selection and ranking technique, i.e., the MR-MR method, to select the most representative features. In the end, multi-class classifiers, i.e., support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN), are employed for the classification of fundus images as healthy or diseased. To assess the performance of the proposed system, various experiments have been performed using combinations of the aforementioned algorithms that show the proposed model based on the RF algorithm with HOG, CNN, LBP, and SURF feature descriptors, providing <=99% accuracy on benchmark datasets and 98.8% on k-fold cross-validation for the early detection of glaucoma.
Object recognition is the technique of specifying the location of various objects in images or videos. There exist numerous algorithms for the recognition of objects such as R-CNN, Fast R-CNN, Faster R-CNN, HOG, R-FCN, SSD, SSP-net, SVM, CNN, YOLO, etc., based on the techniques of machine learning and deep learning. Although these models have been employed for various types of object detection applications, however, tiny object detection faces the challenge of low precision. It is essential to develop a lightweight and robust model for object detection that can detect tiny objects with high precision. In this study, we suggest an enhanced YOLOv2 (You Only Look Once version 2) algorithm for object detection, i.e., vehicle detection and recognition in surveillance videos. We modified the base network of the YOLOv2 by reducing the number of parameters and replacing it with DenseNet. We employed the DenseNet-201 technique for feature extraction in our improved model that extracts the most representative features from the images. Moreover, our proposed model is more compact due to the dense architecture of the base network. We utilized DenseNet-201 as a base network due to the direct connection among all layers, which helps to extract a valuable information from the very first layer and pass it to the final layer. The dataset gathered from the Kaggle and KITTI was used for the training of the proposed model, and we cross-validated the performance using MS COCO and Pascal VOC datasets. To assess the efficacy of the proposed model, we utilized extensive experimentation, which demonstrates that our algorithm beats existing vehicle detection approaches, with an average precision of 97.51%.
The abnormal growth of cells in the skin causes two types of tumor: benign and malignant. Various methods, such as imaging and biopsies, are used by oncologists to assess the presence of skin cancer, but these are time-consuming and require extra human effort. However, some automated methods have been developed by researchers based on hand-crafted feature extraction from skin images. Nevertheless, these methods may fail to detect skin cancers at an early stage if they are tested on unseen data. Therefore, in this study, a novel and robust skin cancer detection model was proposed based on features fusion. First, our proposed model pre-processed the images using a GF filter to remove the noise. Second, the features were manually extracted by employing local binary patterns (LBP), and Inception V3 for automatic feature extraction. Aside from this, an Adam optimizer was utilized for the adjustments of learning rate. In the end, LSTM network was utilized on fused features for the classification of skin cancer into malignant and benign. Our proposed system employs the benefits of both ML- and DL-based algorithms. We utilized the skin lesion DermIS dataset, which is available on the Kaggle website and consists of 1000 images, out of which 500 belong to the benign class and 500 to the malignant class. The proposed methodology attained 99.4% accuracy, 98.7% precision, 98.66% recall, and a 98% F-score. We compared the performance of our features fusion-based method with existing segmentation-based and DL-based techniques. Additionally, we cross-validated the performance of our proposed model using 1000 images from International Skin Image Collection (ISIC), attaining 98.4% detection accuracy. The results show that our method provides significant results compared to existing techniques and outperforms them.
Humanoid robots with artificial intelligence is very captivating field for people, since the robots are introduced. For humanoid robots we can introduce new ideas without any limitations and constraints but in reality there are limitations to implement them. In this paper we are discussing different humanoid robots with their practical applications. Based on their implementation structure detailed comparison of their characteristics is performed and on this bases some limitations and future work has been discussed.
