ISBN 92 75 31578 7El título de esta obra expresa el propósito de que la ciencia en los países de la región contribuya a la mejoría de la salud de los pueblos. El reto es, por lo tanto, doble: tener la capacidad de generar, interpretar y adaptar nuevos conocimientos y tecnologías y, al mismo tiempo, crear espacios de concertación democráticos que permitan que esa capacidad se desarrolle. Para ello, a lo largo de la obra está presente la idea de que hay que replantear las bases y las formas de organización de la actividad científica en salud en América Latina y el Caribe. El libro tiene un carácter más estratégico que informativo y contiene orientaciones para la definición de prioridades y la revisión de proyectos. Los principales beneficiarios de este texto son los investigadores y, sobre todo, las personas vinculadas a la definición de políticas públicas, tanto de ciencia y tecnología como de salud. La OPS espera que esta publicación ayude a estimular el desarrollo científico y tecnológico, y permita aprovechar en su plenitud las oportunidades que este ofrece. La OPS/OMS comparte la creciente preocupación de la comunidad científica y médica con respecto al desarrollo de la resistencia antimicrobiana debido al uso excesivo de antibióticos tanto en humanos como en animales. La presente obra constituye una valiosa aportación a las tareas de vigilancia a la resistencia al antibiótico. Ofrece interesantes artículos agrupados bajo dos grandes rubros: la vigilancia de la resistencia bacteriana a los antimicrobianos, por una parte, y el uso de antimicrobianos y factores determinantes de su consumo, por la otra. Parte de los artículos constituyen una selección de los presentados en la conferencia que sobre el tema se celebró en Caraballeda, Venezuela, en 1998, y otros fueron elaborados ex profeso. Dentro de la diversidad del material incluido en esta publicación, se encuentran trabajos que abordan temas generales como la elección de un método para la vigilancia de bacterias resistentes a los antimicrobianos, y otros varios que tratan situaciones específicas que privan en distintos países de la región de las Américas. La intención de esta obra es contribuir al conocimiento del problema, fomentar las acciones de vigilancia y encontrar la mejor manera de aplicar medidas preventivas, de tal manera que se logre un uso racional de los antibióticos en humanos y en animales. Es de lectura obligada para las instancias oficiales de salud en las Américas, así como para los profesionales de la salud en la práctica tanto privada como pública.
