A new on-line mass analyzing device consisting of an ion guide connected to a commerical quadrupole mass spectrometer is in preparation at the Department of Physics, in University of Jyväskylä. It differs from our present Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) in three essential ways: (a) a small economical quadrupole spectrometer is used instead of a magnetic separator, (b) the whole device operates at ground potential, and (c) electric voltages lower than 50 V are used in bringing ions through a differential pumping section into a high vacuum. The new spectrometer is expected to have similar properties as the IGISOL: excellent stability, similar separation efficiency for all chemical elements, and short separation time. It is intended to be a multi-purpose instrument useful in many fields of research; a few examples related to our own work are given.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
