A b s t r a c t D u r i n g t h e A t l a n t i c L e m o t e L e n s i n g k n d g c e a n -Experiment (ARSLOE), Oct. Nov., 1980, a l a r g e numb e r o f m e t e o r o l o g i c a l and oceanographic i n s t r uments, e s p e c i a l l y wave-measurement instruments, were deployed i n t h e ocean n e a r t h e Army Cor s o f Engineers Pier, Duck, NC. About 9 Waverider buoys were deplqyed i n an approximately rectanqular pattern, about 30 km wide by 40 km seaward. TheWaveriders were an accepted r e f e r e n c e f o r s t u d y o f o t h e r wave measurement instrument systems. Almost a l l o f t h e W a v e r i d e r buoys were c a l i b r a t e d on t h e r o t a t i n g -a r m f a c i l i t y o f t h e NOAA, Engineering Support Office. Pre-and post-deployment calibrations formed the basis for t a b l e s and e q u a t i o n s f o r c o r r e c t i o n o f t h e Waver i d e r measurements. The c a l i b r a t i o n s d i s c u s s e d here established that the Waveriders were measuring lower than specification, averaging about 5 percent l o w (10 percent for variance spectra c o e f f i c i e n t s . ) C o r r e c t i o n s f o r e f f e c t s o f f l u c t u a t i o n s i n w a t e r t e m p e r a t u r e on Waverider s e n s i t i v i t y were required and are provided. The m a n u f a c t u r e r ' s m o d i f i c a t i o n t o p r e v e n t f u t u r e d r i f t i n s e n s i t i t v i t y i s a l s o d e s c r i b e d . P 1. I n t r o d u c t i o nWaverider buoys have been i n use since about 1962 and a r e t h e p r i n c i p a l i n s t r u m e n t f o r n a t i o n a l wave measurement programs f o r many c o u n t r i e s . I t has been f r e q u e n t l y assumed t h a t t h e W a v e r i d e r s e n s i t i v i t y remains within 3 p e r c e n t o f s p e c i f i e d one v o l t p e r m e t e r o f wave e l e v a t i o n t h r o u g h o u t t h e u s e f u l l i f e o f t h eWaverider. For a number of years, no c a l i b r a t i o n a p p a r a t u s was a v a i l a b l e which could accept a complete Waverider buoy, a l t h o u g h a p p r o x i m a t e c a l i b r a t i o n s o v e r l i m i t e d range o f p e r i o d o f v e r t i c a l m o t i o n c o u l dhe obtained by suspending the buoy f r o m a n e l a s t i c c o r d o r s p r i n g and m a i n t a i n i n g v e r t i c a l o s c i l l a t i o n s m a n u a l l y .Canada, England and the United States now have apparatus t o c a l i b r a t e Waveriders on a r o t a t i n g -a r m , v e r t i c a l c i r c l e o f m o t i o n . Venezuela has apparatus f o r g e n e r a t i n g p u r e 'Waverider and WAREP are Datawell p r o p r i e t a r y names f o r t h e buoy and r e c e i v e r system, r e s p e c t i v e l y v e r t i c a l motion. Such devices can improve ocean wave measurement accuracy by d e t e r m i n i n g e r r o r , p o s s i b l y on t h e o r d e r o f a few percent, i n Waverider s e n s i t i v i t y v e r s u s p e r i o d o f m o t i o n .
