SUMMARY The main investigation concerned 50 consecutive patients with recurrent abdominal pain, who were studied from the clinical and eeg point of view. Patients with frank epilepsy, head injury, and neurological deficits were excluded. The mean age of onset was 8.6 years. There was a family history of allergy, migraine or neurosis in 68 per cent of cases. The pain was peri‐umbilical in most cases and lasted for two hours or less in half the cases. There was no evidence that going to sleep or reduction of activities after an attack was a sign that the attacks were of epileptic origin. eeg abnormalities of the type usually associated with epilepsy were found in 22 per cent of cases. All patients who had spike and wave also gave a history of some sort of loss of consciousness. Sleep records gave additional information in 10 per cent of cases. The incidence of 14 and 6 positive spikes was high (24 per cent), but there was no evidence that this eeg finding had clinical significance. A follow‐up study after 12–14 years was made of 14 patients who had previously been referred to the eeg department with a diagnosis of recurrent abdominal pain. Their symptoms had disappeared around the age of 12 years and only one patient (who had spike and wave in his original eeg) had developed epilepsy. Recurrent abdominal pain, or ‘periodic’ syndrome seems to be an epileptic phenomenon in only a very small proportion of cases, and the finding of eeg abnormalities, other than spikes or spike and wave, should not be taken as evidence of epilepsy. SUMMARY The electroencephalograms (EEGS) were recorded of 223 boys aged from 12 to 16 years inclusive from four different kinds of schools in the former borough of Warley, an industrial area on the outskirts of Birmingham, England. A battery of psychological tests were also administered and descriptions of behaviour were obtained from parents and teachers, as well as information on development and previous medical history. The data were analysed in terms of (a) prevalence of certain EEG features, usually considered abnormal, and (b) the relationship between the EEG and other demographic, developmental and psychological factors. Only 2·2 per cent of the EEGS showed definite abnormalities, such as localised sharp waves and/or spike and wave complexes in their resting record and/or during hyperventilation and photic stimulation, while a further 13·9 per cent showed very slight abnormalities or ‘immaturity’. The abnormal and immature EEGS were significantly related to social class, type of school and positive medical history (especially a history of convulsions or faints). Comparisons with previously reported data are discussed. During the course of research into the reorientating of homosexuals routine EEGs were taken to identify patients with low convulsive threshold to exclude them from treatment (aversion). In an initial series of 28 homosexuals 4 showed EEG abnormalities related to organic conditions, but EEGs of the otherwise apparently normal treatment seeking homosexuals showed more marked overbreathing response than would have been expected by chance.
All 788 children attending kindergarten in 2 boroughs of Athens were screened for concentration, hyperkinesis, behaviour disorder and language delay with the help of two questionnaires. The ones with high scores (high risk for presenting learning difficulties (n = 40) were compared with the low (n = 43) and medium (n = 14) risk ones on psychological tests. The above children were reexamined one year later with reading, writing and arithmetic tests. 25% of the high risk groups failed to learn, to read and write while all the low risk group had achieved these abilities. The best predictors were the tests Frostig I and IV and TMS.
