Polymere mit intakten Lactongruppen sind ein neuer Typ von Makromolekülen mit reaktiven Gruppen, die sich durch Polymerisation, Polykondensation und Polyaddition sowie durch Umsetzungen an Makromolekularen selbst relativ einfach darstellen lassen. Insbesondere Polymere mit β‐Lactongruppen sind zahlreichen Additionsreaktionen zugänglich, wobei man u. a. Makromoleküle mit Hydroxycarbonsäure‐ oder Aminocarbonsäuregruppen erhalten kann. Die Umsetzungen gelingen unter milden Bedingungen und sogar in wäßrigem Medium; dabei entstehen häufig wasserlösliche Polymere. Durch Verwendung bi‐ oder oligofunktioneller Additionspartner ist eine Vernetzung bei niedrigen Temperaturen auch aus wäßriger Phase möglich. Polymere mit β‐Lactongruppen eignen sich auch als Basis für Pfropf(co)polymere; je nachdem, ob man monomere Lactone oder monomere Epoxide einsetzt, lassen sich Polyester‐ oder Polyätherzweige aufpfropfen.
