Broadband ISDN was developed with the goal ofproviding a multiplicity of services over a standardized interface. Thefast-packet technology ofasynchronous transfer mode (ATM) makes it possible to transport information with widely differing characteristics, from bursty data services to highdefinition television signals, over a range ofspeeds. With ATM technology, it is possible to build new high-speed networking equipment for the customer. These new products, plus a defined interface to Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) standards, and powerful signaling and control capabilities for multimedia services, are making broadband ISDN the basis for the next generation ofnetwork infrastructures. To provide global broadband products and services, international broadband standards are critical. This paper reviews the work ofdomestic and international standards bodies on a number ofimportant standards for ATM transport, broadband signaling, and other aspects ofbroadband ISDN, and discusses how industry forums are working to ensure the compatibility ofproducts and services ofmultiple vendors.
Today's businesses require the movement and management of an increasing quantity and variety of infomtion. This infomtion explosion will shape the evolution of communications networks and services in ways which we cannot fully comprehend. Network equipment suppliers and service providers are challenged to develop and deploy neworks which cost effectively meet the current needs of their customers, while simultaneously evolving to address their future needs. AT&T Network Systems has deJned a Broadband Networking Architecture which enables network service providers to meet the challenges in today's environment while providing a Pexible pamework for meeting tomorrow's network requirements. This paper bri@y reviews the current BroadbandATM market situation and describes AT&T Network Systems Service Net-2OOO Broadband NetworkArchifecfure plans.
