Die größten klinischen Erfahrungen liegen mit hochreinem, dichtem Aluminiumoxid vor, das sich durch eine hervorragende GewebsVerträglichkeit sowie durch gute mechanische Eigenschaften auszeichnet und überwiegend in Gelenkprothesen Anwendung findet. Erste Erfahrungen mit halbleitenden Rutilkeramiken deuten auf gute blutverträgliche Eigenschaften hin, so daß ihr Einsatz bei starren Implantaten im kardiovaskulären System zu erwarten ist. Die Anwendung resorbierbarer, bioaktiver Keramik-Implantate liegt im Bereich der Rekonstruktion von Knochendefekten. In der Dentalchirurgie befinden sich Wurzelimplantate aus bioinerten und bioaktiven Keramiken für eine verbesserte Fixierung von Zahnprothesen in klinischer Erprobung.
