This report presents the finding of a reconnaissance of the quality of surface streams in the State of Alabama during 1960. The chemical quality of Alabama streams is good. The mineral content in more than 90 percent of the streams is less than 200 ppm. Hardness is perhaps the most objectionable feature of water quality. Some waters in the State exceed 120 ppm hardness. Generally, the chemical characteristics of the water in the streams are related to natural conditions. Differences in the chemical charac¬ teristics between areas of the State are due chiefly to differences in rock type, whereas differences in chemical characteristics within areas are related to rainfall.
