An experimental study has been made of parameters which control the coalescence o f drops in the diameter range 200 to 800 microns with large liquid hemispherical targets. It is shown that the initiation of the coalescence mechanism for electrically neutral drops in equilibrium with their vapour is governed by two dimensionless parameters :where p~ = drop density, PM = medium density, y = surface tension, VN = normal component of impact velocity and D = drop diameter.
