The ability to predict accurately fluid-structure interaction problems is of fundamental importance for design, analysis and reconstruction in many areas of mechanical and civil engineering. In order to characterize the effects of an accidental or intentional explosion close to a building, a coupled fluid-structure interaction calculation has to be carried out. The initial timescales of such events dictate the use of fluid and structure codes based on explicit timescales, and able to deal with strong shocks and large deformations and cracking.
