This study aimed to investigate the experiences of people with intellectual disability (ID) using information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the ways these technologies foster social connectedness. In partnership with a community mental health organization, this qualitative descriptive study explored the experiences of 10 people with ID using ICTs. Participants described how ICTs Opened the Door to Possibilities in their life – ICTs provided an avenue for connecting with other people, a means to pursue personal interests and a tool for organizing everyday life. Opening the door to possibilities was further understood as movement towards digital inclusion for people with ID, conceptualized as the fit between social opportunity and personal skills. We have identified the prominent role social supports play in creating (and constraining) opportunities for digital inclusion, and that digital inclusion has the potential to enable social connectedness and the development of agency. Consideration of the complex interaction between social opportunity and personal skills, and the mediating influence of supports, will enhance the inclusion of people with ID.
Within 10 days after cystoscopy causing urosepsis this patient developed persistant neckpain as initial symptom of vertebral osteomyelitis. E. coli was isolated from urine, blood cultures and later from bone biopsy. Antibiotic treatment did not stop the progress of the disease. A transverse spinal cord syndrome occurred due to a pathological fracture of C5 and C6 and operative decompression was necessary. The rapid onset of osteomyelitis was impressive. For effective treatment of bacterial osteomyelitis a bone biopsy is sometimes unavoidable and indicated.
All healthcare providers strive to eradicate diagnostic error. By examining specific anatomical and pathological predictors on radiographs for such error, as well as extrinsic factors that may affect reporting accuracy, image interpretation training can focus on these "problem" areas and influence which radiographic abnormality detection schemes are appropriate to implement in A&E departments.
The compression characteristics of 25 fresh cadaveric vertebrae of different height had been analysed in static compression tests and related to CAT densitometry values. A relationship between fracture load and CAT densitometry values of the vertebral body (spongiosa and corticalis) had been found, which can be described as a logarithmical function (r2 = 0.91). Separated CAT measurements of spongiosa also showed a logarithmical function (r2 = 0.89). Consequently, the thin corticalis of vertebral waist is of subordinate importance in correlation to fracture load. An analogously explored average CAT densitometry value showed no definite dependence on corticalis capacity. The graphic description of analysed spongiosa areas in absorption profile (CAT histogram) almost resulted in a Gauss distribution.
