3,3,6,8-Telrunrelhyl-I-tetralone, a Condensation Product of AcetoneA new condensation product of acetone, 3,3,6,8-tetramethyl-I-tetralone (I), has been isolated from the by-products of the technical synthesis of isophorone from acetone (Scholven-process). The strucure of 1 has been determined by chemical and spectroscopic methods. Oxidation of 1 with selenium dioxide yields a diketone 10 which is remarkably reactive. The HzOz-oxidation of 10 gives the dicarboxylic acid anhydride 13, which in reaction with sulfuric acid affords the indanone carboxylic acid 15. Reduction of 13 yields the hydroxy acid 16. Hydrogenation of the diketone 10 gives the tetralindiol 17.
Ocrozeihrene, an Aromatic Hydrocarbon Having Six Formally Fixed Double BondsOctazethrene*) (1) is prepared from the diketone 3 by ring closure to form the quinone 4, reduction to dihydrooctazethrene (7). and subsequent dehydrogenation. The absorption spectra of the series of annellated compounds zethrene, heptazethrene, and octazethrene are discussed. The constitution of octazethrenequinone (4) is evident from its degradation to hexacene-diquinone (6).Einige Definitionen der Aromatizitat verlangen, dal3 ein aromatischer Kohlenwasserstoff zwei oder mehr Kekuie-Strukturen haben muB.
