The biological treatment process has always been a significant part in wastewater treatment. The biologicaltreatment utilizes the metabolic activity of the microorganisms in reducing the pollution load in thewastewater. In this context the effective microbial (EM) formulation gaining momentum nowadays becauseit is an eco-friendly sustainable technology. In this study, the EM formulation has been formulated totallyusing organic materials for the onsite wastewater treatment like sewers and septic tanks in a cost-effectivemanner. A lab scale experiment was also done to prove the effectiveness of the traditionally prepared EMapplied to sewage water in different dosage (1 to 3%) and at different time intervals of 2, 4 and 6 days. Theresults showed that a significant decrease in the various parameters viz., pH, EC, TDS, TSS, BOD and COD.The maximum reduction of BOD (82%) and COD (81%) was obtained in the sewage water inoculated with3% dosage of EM for a incubation period of 6 days. The functional groups in EM which responsible forpollution reduction were also characterised using FTIR analysis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
