Impedance spectroscopy can be used to determine the influence of several membrane parameters on the membrane resistance of anion selective CHEMFETs. The concentration of the ammonium sites in the membrane, the anion-receptor complex stoichiometry, and the polarity of the membrane matrix are of particular importance. In general the resistance of polysiloxane membranes is higher than that of PVC membranes. However, in polysiloxane membranes the membrane polarity can be influenced by the type or concentration of polar substituents on the polysiloxane chain. Polysiloxane ion-exchange membranes with 25 mol% of polar sulfone substituents exhibit the same conductance as NPOE plasticized PVC membranes. Remarkably, the membrane resistance of cation-selective polysiloxane membranes is much lower and is much less dependent on the substituents.

Combination of calix[4]arenes functionalized at the upper rim at the 5- and 17-positions with amino and formyl groups, respectively, gives a new series of "head-to-head" linked double calix[4]arenes in nearly quantitative yield. The X-ray structure of a modified double calix[4]arene is reported. The novel, highly preorganized receptor molecules complex silver(I) ions (K(ass) = 9.5 x 10(5) M(-)(1) in CDCl(3)); the selectivity of complexation was studied by supported liquid membrane transport experiments and chemically modified field effect transistor measurements.

Novel calix[4]arenes fixed in the 1,3-alternate conformation and functionalized with thioamide groups have been synthesized and their selectivities for Pb 2ϩ and Cd 2ϩ ions in chemically modified field effect transistors (CHEMFETs) have been evaluated. The 25,27-bis(dimethylaminothiocarbonylmethoxy)-26,28-dipropoxycalix[4]arene 3 in the 1,3-alternate conformation is more selective for Pb 2ϩ than the analogous cone conformer. The 1,3-alternate calix[4]arene 8 having, in the 25-and 27-positions, two pairs of vicinal thioamide moieties at the same face of the molecule, has the highest selectivities for Cd 2ϩ reported so far.
