In the area studied the territory of the Yellowhammer tended to be long and narrow, e.g. based on a hedge, that of the Corn Bunting to be centred over corn fields. The different forms of territorial fighting in the two species are described. In both species a prime function of the territory appears to be to facilitate the formation and maintenance of the bond between the sexes.
