Zur Untersuchung der beim Ionenstoß übertragenen Bewegungsenergie wurde im genannten Energiebereich die Reichweite von Wasserstoff-, Helium-und Neonionen in leichtem und schwerem Wasserstoff (über die differentielle Ionisation der Gase) gemessen. Sie ist bei den niedrigeren Energien dieses Bereiches für alle Geschoßmassen in Deuterium geringfügig größer -die übertragene kinetische Energie demnach kleiner -als in leichtem Wasserstoff. Mit zunehmenden Geschoß-geschwindigkeiten kehrten sich diese Verhältnisse für die schweren Ionen um, was durch die Winkelstreuung erklärt wird.Die Übereinstimmung mit der Theorie ist zufriedenstellend: Größenordnung und Massenabhängig-keit der übertragenen Bewegungsenergie entsprechen der von BOHR (1948) angegebenen Vorstellung, daß die elastische Wechselwirkung auf der elektrostatischen Abstoßung der sich in diesem Energiebereich relativ schwach durchdringenden Stoßpartner beruht. Dabei ist der übertragene Impuls abhängig von der Ordnungszahl, aber in erster Näherung unabhängig von der Masse der Stoßpartner; daraus folgt die -experimentell bestätigte -Massenabhängigkeit der vom Teilchen abgegebenen Energie: die Bremsung ist im schweren Gas kleiner als im leichten.Beim Teilchenstoß unterscheidet man gewöhnlich zwischen dem "unelastischen Stoß" (Anregung und Ionisation der Teilchen) und dem hier interessierenden "elastischen Stoß", d. h., der Wechselwirkung mit dem Gesamtatom, an das ein Teil der Stoß-energie als Bewegungsenergie übertragen wird. Von den elastischen Stoßprozessen sind seit langem bei niedrigen Energien der aus der Gaskinetik geläufige "hard-sphere"-Stoß kompakter neutraler Teilchen ("harte Kugeln") bekannt und bei hohen Energien
