The Paper describes the planning, design and construction of the Pitlochry Bypass. The bypass was built as part of the reconstruction of the A9 trunk-road from Perth to Inverness which is one of the main tourist routes of Scotland. The area around the town of Pitlochry is one of outstanding natural beauty and the impact of the new road was clearly substantial. The Paper concentrates on traffc impacts, route selection and integration, bridge forms, impact on local activities and construction criteria which were seen by the Authors as the key issues for this scheme.
