The President has referred to the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) as the "Mission from planet Earth". This paper looks at the SEI from an information system perspective and discusses information system definition efforts being conducted in support of NASA's Lunar Mars Exploration Program Office (LMEPO) at JSC. The development of an integrated, effective SEI information System (SIS) is recognized as crucial t o the success of the SEI missions. This paper outlines some of the new and unique challenges for the SIS as evidenced in the Lunar and the Mars missions along with soma preliminary conceptual approaches, both architectural and technological, being investigated to address them.
The paper starts with a survey over history and presentday situation of educational concepts and design methods in computer architecture. Complexity problems, bad design habits, cooperation problems between specialists, as well as their changing range of responsibility are covered, and the consequences of the developmental trends are discussed: now it is time for switching over to an integrated teaching of hardware/software design methods. The HIM scheme (hierarchy of interpretive modules) is suggested as a conceptual machine organization framework for modelling the implementation of language hierarchies. The application of the HIM scheme for better understanding of semantics, and for a derivation of designing guidelines is discussed.
To provide the autonomy needed by low, earth-orbiting satellites, NASA's first standard on-board processor requires changing only interfacing hardware from mission to mission.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
