No sistema de produção animal, a alimentação representa o item de maior custo. Deste modo, possíveis alternativas de alimentos que assegurem taxas compatíveis de desempenho animal com boa lucratividade devem ser avaliadas. O crambe, da família Brassicaceas, é uma planta de clima subtropical, bem adaptada aos climas quentes e frios, apresentando como principal característica elevada concentração de óleo e proteína. Seus coprodutos apresentam elevado teor proteico (20 a 30 %) e energético (em torno de 29 %), sendo considerada uma boa alternativa na alimentação de ruminantes. Neste contexto iremos abordar as principais limitações e os potenciais de uso de coprodutos de crambe, como alternativa a substituição das fontes proteicas tradicionais, na alimentação de ruminantes.
