Chemical composition in 47 samples of manne green seaweeds consisting of nine genera representing 27 different species at Indkn coast of Saurashtra region have been studied. Ash, insoluble ash, sulphate, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium have been estimated. Significant variations were observed in chemical composition among the different genera of seaweeds. The same species collected from different localities at a different period also showed considerable variations.
Mannitol content of thirty five samples of marine brown algae consisting of eleven genera representing fifteen species from the coast of Saurashtra has been determined. Variations in mannitol content were observed among different genera of the seaweeds. The same species collected from different locations and at different periods also showed considerable variations.
Amino acid composition in protein hydrolyzates of five species of Ulva, U. fasciata, U. lactuca, U. profunda, U. rigida and U. stenophylla from different parts of Saurashtra coast were studied.Two dimensional paper chromatography technique was used for Separation and estimation of compounds. Tryptophan was estimated by direct colorimetric method.In all twentyone amino acids are detected and estimated. Qualitatively very little changes are observed in the protein hydrolyzates, but quantitative changes are quite significant. Aspartic acid is a dominant compound. Rare compounds like ornithine and -aminobutyric acid have been estimated. Cysteic acid and tryptophan are for the first time estimated in Indian marine green algae.
