This Paper introduces an approach to the automatic generation of parts of the firmware for intelligent field devices in distributed automation systems. For this purpose the modeling of information on communication interface and functionality of such a device using OWL ontologies is discussed. In a further step a concept for a system that generates an XMI-based UML notation of firmware components from one or more source ontologies is presented.
