The ternary system U-C-0 was investigated and a diagram is given expressing the phase relations in specimens which were reacted a t 1800'C in vacuum or in inert atmospheres and furnace cooled. A U(C,O) single-phase area exists in this diagram. T h e limit of substitutional solid solution of oxygen atoms for carbon atoms in UC is 12.5 at.%, which means that only 25% of the carbon atoms in UC can be replaced by oxygen atoms. The oxygen-saturated U C phase, U(CO.~,OO.Z,), has a lattice parameter of 4.953 f 0.001 A. The carbon monoxide partial pressures in equilibrium with this phase were determined for temperatures between 1705' and 1855'C.
Wetting tests were performed with refractory metalceramic combinations selected on the basis of previous compatibility studies. Sessile drop contact angles between liquid Cr, V, Pt, Rh, Mo, and Mo-Re alloy and solid Thoz, HfOz, ZrOz, HfC, TaC, and ZrC were measured at temperatures up to 2800°C in helium. Little wetting occurred between these metals and the refractory oxides, but Mo and the Mo-Re alloy did wet the refractory carbides. Microscopic examination of the metalceramic interfaces showed that HfC-Mo-40 wt% Re and ZrC-Mo-40 wt% Re had highly desirable wetting and solubility characteristics for making cermets. Specimens were fabricated from these two systems with 25 and 50 vol% metal by cold-pressing and sintering and by hotpressing. The microstructures of these cermets consisted of small, uniformly dispersed carbide particles in Mo-Re matrixes. The hardnesses and transverse rupture strengths of these cermets indicate that they have considerable promise for high-temperature applications.
Sometime during the second decade of the second century CE, Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, was conveyed under guard to Rome where he expected to leave this world through the mouths of the beasts in the arena. Along his journey he stopped at Philadelphia and Smyrna. At each stop he received visitors from a number of churches in the area. He, in turn, wrote letters to those churches and to the church at Rome. The letters of Ignatius have been the subject of scholarly investigation for over a century. The authenticity of the middle recension of those letters is almost universally acknowledged. These letters have been studied for the light they can shed on church structure in Asia Minor at the beginning of the second century, the theology of Ignatius within its historical context, and the distinctive personality of Ignatius. One aspect of these documents which has implications for all other interests has not been satisfactorily explained, namely, how Ignatius understood his own letter writing activity. What gave Ignatius the audacity to interfere in the life of churches outside of Syria, and what kind of authority did he expect the admonitions contained in his letters to carry?
The
Acts of Thomas
, consisting of thirteen acts followed by a martyrdom, depicts Judas Thomas (or Didymos) as the twin brother of Jesus and apostle to Parthia and India.
