Uber epidemisches Auftreten der Euzephalit i s ist in Deutschland während rund dreier Jahrzehnte nicht mehr berichtet worden. Das Fehlen dieser Seuche, deren pandemische Züge nach Beendigung des ersten Weltkrieges alle Kontinente heimsuchten, ist um so bemerkenswerter, als in verschiedenen außereuropäischen Ländern endemische und epidemische Vorkommen tiicht selten sind. Besonders in Nordamerika entstand ein umfangreiches Schrifttum über die St.-Louis-Enzephalitis, in Rußland über die Sibirische Enzephalitis und in Japan über die Enzephalitis japonica Typ B. Alle diese Spielarten gehören bei teilweiser Verwandtschaft der erregenden Viren (C a s a 1 s), zusammen mit einigen selteneren Krankheitsbildern, zu der Gruppe der Sommer-Enzephalitiden. Diese Bezeichnung weist auf das saisongebundene Auftreten hin. Die Bevorzugung der Frühjahrs-, Sommer-oder Herbstmonate ist darauf zurückzuführen, daß in die Infektketten Arthropoden, Zecken (Ixodes, Dermanyssus) und Mücken (Aedes, Culex), als Uberträger eingeschaltet sind, deren Biologie weitgehend den Saisonrhythmus dieser Seuchen bestimmt.
