Detailed mapping throughout much of the Dry Valleys area indicates the region is underlain by 15 major granitoid plutons and numerous smaller plugs and dikes. Intrusive relationships of these plutons and dikes indicate repeated intrusion of superficially similar granitoids at different times. Sufficient internal lithologjc variation occurs within individual plutons, to allow correlation with several of the previously defined granitoid units based on lithologic character. Consequently, previous subdivision schemes based on lithology are no longer tenable and are here replaced with a G92026 Received 2 June 1992; accepted 29 April 1993subdivision scheme based on the identification of individual plutons.The elongate, concordant Bonney, Denton, Cavendish, and Wheeler Plutons, which range in composition between monzodiorite and granodiorite, are the oldest relatively undeformed plutons in the Dry Valleys area. Each pluton is characterised by flow alignment of K-feldspar megacrysts, hornblende, biotite, and mafic enclaves. Field relationships and radiometric dating indicate these are deep-level plutons, emplaced synchronous with upper amphibolite facies metamorphism of the adjacent Koettlitz Group between 589 and 490 Ma ago. Elongate, discordant plutons of equigranular homogeneous biotite granodiorite and granite (Hedley, Valhalla, St Johns, Suess) were subsequently emplaced by stoping at a relatively high crustal level at 490 Ma.These eight plutons are cut by numerous swarms of Vanda mafic and felsic porphyry dikes. The ovoid, discordant, high level Pearse, Nibelungen, Orestes, Brownworth, Swinford, and Harker Plutons, emplaced between c. 486 and 477 Ma, display mutually crosscutting relationships with the youngest of the Vanda dikes. These younger plutons range in composition between monzonite and granite. Some are characterised by K-feldspar megacrystic textures superficially similar to some of the oldest concordant plutons.

Three phases of folding have been recognised in the greywacke-Alpine schist transition in the Torlesse terrane rocks of the Callery River headwaters. Westland. The first phase was synmetamorphic and isoclinal (F 1 ). This .def?rmation resulted in variable textural reconstitutiOn of the rocks (textural zones 2 and 3). Subsequent deformation has disrupted the textural zone boundaries, so that the boundaries have been folded almost isoclinally (F 2 ) and refolded by an upnght antiformal structure (F 3 ) correlated to Alpine Fault related structures.All these structures are crosscut by several generations of veins. Three late-stage vein types are recognised on the basis of mineralo~y and fl~id inclusion studies. Type I veins consist of calcite and quartz, and were formed by H20-C02 fluids

Ductile structures in the greenschist facies rocks of the Alpine Schist that lie in the headwaters of the Whataroa, Callery, and Balfour valleys formed during Mesozoic deformation, similar to those in the Otago Schist to the south. A general westward increase in metamorphic grade is locally disrupted and repeated by several late metamorphic faults. The first appearance of biotite occurs at tectonic boundaries in the Callery and Balfour sections. Metagreywackes are juxtaposed against a greenschistmetapelite-metachert sequence by a synmetamorphic ductile high strain zone in the lower Balfour valley. A prominent quartz rodding lineation in the high strain zone defines a stretching direction that plunges about 30° southwest. Structures in the high strain zone are locally cut by quartz (±biotite) veins, which have been weakly deformed. Fluid inclusions in quartz veins indicate that the veins formed about 8-10 km deep and that uplift was initially nearly isothermal. Pervasive foliation that formed during Mesozoic deformation was deformed into upright, open, kilometrescale folds, with some foliation-parallel boudinage, associated with the Miocene inception of the Alpine Fault. The resultant north to northeast trending folds plunge gently southwards. Deformation associated with Alpine Fault movement was only minor in the Alpine Schist greenschist facies and resulted in passive differential uplift of deeper parts of the schist pile in the west.
