This study is mainly related with the physical and chemical characterization of a solid waste, produced in a municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration process, which is usually referred as air pollution control (APC) residue. The moisture content, loss on ignition (LOI), particle size distribution, density, porosity, specific surface area and morphology were the physical properties addressed here. At the chemical level, total elemental content (TC), total availability (TA) and the leaching behaviour with compliance tests were determined, as well as the acid neutralization capacity (ANC). The main mineralogical crystalline phases were identified, and the thermal behaviour of the APC residues is also shown. The experimental work involves several techniques such as laser diffraction spectrometry, mercury porosimetry, helium pycnometry, gas adsorption, flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), ion chromatography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and simultaneous thermal analysis (STA). The results point out that the APC residues do not comply with regulations in force at the developed countries, and therefore the waste should be considered hazardous. Among the considered heavy metals, lead, zinc and chromium were identified as the most problematic ones, and their total elemental quantities are similar for several samples colleted in an industrial plant at different times. Moreover, the high amount of soluble salts (NaCl, KCl, calcium compounds) may constitute a major problem and should be taken into account for all management strategies. The solubility in water is very high (more than 24% for a solid/liquid ratio of 10) and thus the possible utilizations of this residue are very limited, creating difficulties also in the ordinary treatments, such as in solidification/stabilization with binders.

Promoters play an important role in the acidity and redox properties of Mo oxide catalysts supported on alumina spheres, and the catalytic performance reveals a potential effect between Cu and Mo oxides reduced partially, which improves the allyl alcohol selectivity.

Boric acid (HBO) is being used effectively nowadays in traps/baits for the management of Aedes aegypti L. and Aedes albopictus Skuse species of mosquitoes, which are the main spreading vectors worldwide for diseases such as malaria, dengue, and zika. Previously, we published results on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of its molecular triclinic HBO-2A and trigonal HBO-3T polymorphs within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). Because of the renewed importance of these materials, the focus of this work is on the vibrational properties of the bulk boric acid 2A and 3T polymorphs. We measured the infrared and Raman spectra of the former, which was accompanied and interpreted through state-of-the-art DFT calculations, supplemented by computations regarding the HBO molecule and two-dimensional layers based on the bulk structures. We identify/assign their normal modes and find vibrational signatures for each polymorph as well as in- and out-of-plane motions and molecular vibrations, unveiling a nice agreement between the DFT level of theory employed and our improved spectroscopic measurements in the wavenumber ranges of 400-2000 cm (infrared) and 0-1500 cm (Raman). We show that a dispersion-corrected DFT functional within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) can be very accurate in describing the vibrational properties of the boric acid polymorphs. Besides, several issues left open/not clearly resolved in previously published works on the vibrational mode assignments of the bulk and 2D sheets of boric acid are explained satisfactorily. Finally, phonon dispersions and associated densities of states were also evaluated for each polymorph along with their temperature-dependent DFT-calculated entropy, enthalpy, free energy, heat capacity, and Debye temperature. In particular, our DFT calculations suggest a possible way to differentiate the 2A and 3T boric acid polymorphs through Raman spectroscopy and heat capacity measurements.

Density functional calculations were performed to study the properties of the three main glycine solid-state polymorphs α, β, and γ and the glycine dihydrate (GDH) crystal. Optimized unit cell geometries, Kohn–Sham electron energy bands, electron densities of states, population charges, carrier effective masses, optical absorption, and complex dielectric functions were obtained for each glycine system using a GGA functional plus the TS dispersion correction, leading to lattice parameters very close to the experimental values. The theoretical fundamental gaps of all glycine crystals are indirect and near 5 eV. The carrier effective masses are anisotropic and especially heavy (∼26 free electron masses at most) for holes in the case of the GDH crystal. The optical absorption and the dielectric function are very sensitive to the polarization of light in all glycine-based crystals.
