We conclude that the FEC2 regimen, in which epirubicin replaced the methotrexate in CMF, is the preferable adjuvant chemotherapy regimen for premenopausal patients with operable axillary node-positive breast cancer.
Persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, or intolerance of feeding, are well recognised problems in children after surgical correction of intestinal malrotation. Conversely, intestinal malrotation is a common accompaniment of chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction. We investigated motor activity of the small intestine during fasting in eight children who had persistent vomiting, intolerance of full enteral feeding, or severe diarrhoea after surgical correction of intestinal malrotation. Abnormality of motor function similar to that found in neuropathic pseudo-obstruction was found in seven of the eight patients. Persistence of symptoms after surgical correction of a malrotation is associated with a motility disturbance which seems to be due to a defect of intrinsic enteric innervation. Such a defect may be important in the aetiology of the malrotation.Malrotation of the midgut results from a disturbance of the process by which the herniated midgut rotates and returns to the enlarging fetal abdominal cavity in the twelfth week of gestation. After birth, small intestinal malrotation frequently presents with acute intestinal obstruction and requires surgical intervention.' Symptoms persist after surgery and disordered feeding consistent with abnormal motility is well recognised. As malrotation is common in neuropathic pseudo-obstructive disorders of the midgut, we have studied the motor function of the small intestine in eight children with persistent feeding problems, vomiting, or diarrhoea after surgery in order to investigate whether abnormalities of motility were present which might underlie such problems.
The data show that combined chemohormonal treatment reduces the risk of relapse in postmenopausal patients with node-positive breast cancer. No evidence was found, however, for an improvement in overall survival. The size of benefit observed for both outcomes was consistent with that reported in the Early Breast Cancer Trialists' Collaborative Group overview. The trial presented here, however, provides the first report of an improvement in RFS associated with the provision of a single cytotoxic drug in addition to prolonged TAM.
SUMMARYWe conducted a survey to explore levels of awareness and knowledge of HPV and cervical cancer in 170 female students and whether mode of data collection (online vs. paper) affected the results. 27% of women named HPV as a cause of cervical cancer with online respondents more likely to do so. 75% of women had heard of HPV. More online respondents had heard of HPV than paper respondents. 127 women reported having heard of HPV, with a mean knowledge score of 2.989 (SD = 1.599). Online respondents scored higher (3.57, SD = 1.316) than paper respondents (2.688, SD = 1.591). Knowledge and awareness of HPV and its link to cervical cancer appear to have increased which may be related to the HPV vaccination programme. However, there is still a considerable number of women with little to no knowledge of HPV. Online surveys may result in an inflated estimation of awareness and knowledge.
Fibroblast growth factor 8 can transform NIH3T3 cells and its expression has been found to be associated with breast and prostate cancer. Following our finding that fibroblast growth factor 8 mRNA expression is increased in breast cancer, we have undertaken an immunohistochemistry study of fibroblast growth factor 8 expression in a series of human breast tissues and other normal tissues. Our findings confirm increased expression of fibroblast growth factor 8 in malignant breast tissue but also show significant fibroblast growth factor 8 expression in non-malignant breast epithelial cells. No significant difference in fibroblast growth factor 8 expression was found between different grades of ductal carcinoma, lobular carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in-situ or cancer of different oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor or nodal status. The highest levels of fibroblast growth factor 8 expression were found in lactating breast tissues and fibroblast growth factor 8 was also detected in human milk. A survey of other normal tissues showed that fibroblast growth factor 8 is expressed in the proliferative cells of the dermis and epithelial cells in colon, ovary fallopian tube and uterus. Fibroblast growth factor 8 appears to be expressed in several organs in man and appears to have an importance in lactation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
