A total of 2114 scores of elbow arthrosis from the official screening programme of the German Rottweiler Breeding Association (ADRK) were analysed in respect of prevalence and genetic disposition. 45.8% showed no signs of arthritis, 40.6% were scored in Grade 1 with minor osteophytes and 13.6% were affected by arthritis of clinical relevance (Grade 2 and 3). REML estimates showed a heritability of 28% and a litter variance of 6.4%. The only significant environmental fixed effect was gender. 39.1% of the male and 51.5% of the female were free from ED which corresponds with 19.2% of the male and only 8.8% of the female in the critical ED classes of Grade 2 and 3. Differences between the years of examination could be explained by genetic gain. Month of birth as well as age at examination, in the range covered by this study, was not significant. It was stated that the effect of bodyweight should be tested before starting a breeding programme. U.S.
Estimation of the Heritability of Displacement of the Abomasum in Hessian Black Pied CattleThe degree of heritability of displacement of the abomasum was estimated in 30 Hessian herds breeding German Black Pied cattle in which displacement of the abomasum occurred more frequently than normal. Estimation was made by investigating the similarity between mothers and daughters. A total of 2626 pairs were used for this investigation, based on the absence or occurrence of abomasal displacement in the mothers and daughters. The fourpoint correlation coefficient was determined for each herd using a quadrant square. The arithmetic means were then calculated from the correlation coefficients. The number of herds examined was limited by assuming the correlation coefficient to be stable when it varied by less than 0.02 units during the investigation of more than 15 herds. Heritability was then calculated using the correlation coefficient. The correlation coefficient was stable after examining 15 herds; for the examination of the last six herds, it was 0.12 (0.11 7-0.124) units. Based on this, the heritability of displacement of the abomasum in the herds was taken to be h* = 0.24.
Summary Data from 2600 kidding and 1600 adult lactations, recorded between 1972 and 1978 were utilized to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters for litter size, litter weight and milk production (after weaning) in the Damascus breed or goat. Data were first corrected for environmental effects using least‐squares constants. Estimates of heritability from daughter‐dam regressions were around zero for litter size and litter weight, whereas those for 90‐day, 150‐day, total milk yield and days in milk after weaning were 0,35 ± 0,08, 0,31 ± 0,08, 0,29 ± 0,08 and 0,16 ± 0,06 respectively. Genetic correlations among part and whole lactation yield were very high indicating that these traits are usually influenced by the same genes. Genetic correlations among reproductive traits could not be estimated because the product of the respective genetic variance components was either zero or negative in most cases. Phenotypic and environmental correlations were moderately high to very high. The implications of the models used and the results obtained for genetic improvement by selection are discussed.
