Das Klein‐Zyklotron COLUMBUS, das in Kooperation des Coburger Gymnasiums Ernestinum mit der Hochschule Coburg entwickelt wurde, ist ein Teilchenbeschleuniger für Schul‐ und Lehrzwecke.
Infolge eines Magnetfeldes bewegen sich Ionen auf Spiralbahnen, wobei diese in konstanten Zeitabständen durch ein hochfrequentes E‐Feld beschleunigt werden und so an kinetischer Energie gewinnen. Ein Lineartranslator verfährt einen Ionen‐Detektor quer durch diese Bahnen; dabei wird stets der aktuellen Position die entsprechende Ionenstromstärke zugeordnet.
Das Ergebnis ist ein spezifisches Spektrum; aus der Lage der jeweiligen Peaks lassen sich beispielsweise die Radien der Spiralbahn und daraus die Energie der Ionen berechnen.
Für die Zukunft ist geplant, das Messsystem mit einer benutzerfreundlichen Bedienoberfläche auszustatten, um den pädagogischen Anforderungen des Zyklotrons gerecht zu werden.
