A 39-YEAR-OLD WOMAN developed a 2-cm nodule in the right upper thyroid. There were no symptoms or signs of hyperthyroidism; however, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was suppressed (,0.06 mIU/L [0.35-5.5]). Free thyroxine index (FTI) was 2.6 (1.2-4.2). 123 I scanning showed a hyperfunctioning nodule corresponding to physical exam, with faint outlining of the remaining suppressed gland (Fig. 1). 131 I therapy was prescribed.
