Patients who had a Polya gastrectomy have been followed up on a regular basis from 1956 to the present time. Serum vit. B12, haemoglobin (Hb) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were measured on each patient.Forty-three patients have been followed up for at least 10 years. Of these 24 (56%) had become vitamin B12 deficient after 10 years, and others subsequently developed this deficiency between 10 and 15 years.None of the patients in this study presented with megaloblastic anaemia. The mean haemoglobin at the time of diagnosis of their vit. B12 deficiency was 13.5 g%. The mean MCV was 90 cu. mu. (N.R. 76-96 cu. mu.).The shortest interval after gastrectomy that any patient in this group presented with vit, B12 deficiency was 5t years and the mean time of onset was 9.8 years. This is later than previous reports have suggested.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
