Abstract:For many years, the study of toxic Dinophysis species was primarily restricted to field populations until it was recently demonstrated that some of these organisms can be mixotrophically cultured in the laboratory with the ciliate prey, Myrionecta rubra, which had previously been fed with cryptophytes of the genus Teleaulax and Geminigera. Here we investigated the influence of growth phase and light intensity on the production of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins and pectenotoxins (PTXs) in cultures of Dinophysis acuminata from the northeastern United States. The cell toxin content of okadaic acid (OA), dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1), pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2), and the okadaic acid diol ester (OA-D8) varied significantly with growth phase under all light treatments, at 6 °C. Each toxin quota remained low during middle and late exponential phases, but significantly increased by mid-plateau phase. DTX1 and OA-D8 were variable through plateau phase, while OA and PTX2 significantly decreased as the culture aged. Although maximum toxin content was not achieved until middle plateau phase, the rate of toxin production was generally greatest during exponential growth. The low and relatively constant cellular toxin levels observed during exponential and early-plateau phase indicate a balance between toxin production and growth, whereas in the middle-plateau phase, toxin production continues even though the cells are no longer capable of dividing, leading to higher toxin quotas. Light was required for Dinophysis growth and the production of all toxins, however, there was no significant difference in growth rates or toxin quotas between the higher light treatments ranging from 65 to 300 μmol photons m −2 s −1. These results demonstrate that DSP production in D. acuminata is constitutive, and that specific toxins are differentially produced or accumulated during the cells' growth phase, possibly in response to changes to their environment.Please note that this is an author-produced PDF of an article accepted for publication following peer review. The peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-triggered radical and nonradical active species can synergistically guarantee selectively removing micropollutants in complex wastewater; however, realizing this on heterogeneous metal-based catalysts with single active sites remains challenging due to insufficient electron cycle. Herein, we design asymmetric Co–O–Bi triple-atom sites in Co-doped Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 to facilitate PMS oxidation and reduction simultaneously by enhancing the electron transfer between the active sites. We propose that the asymmetric Co–O–Bi sites result in an electron density increase in the Bi sites and decrease in the Co sites, thereby PMS undergoes a reduction reaction to generate SO 4 •- and •OH at the Bi site and an oxidation reaction to generate 1 O 2 at the Co site. We suggest that the synergistic effect of SO 4 •- , •OH, and 1 O 2 enables efficient removal and mineralization of micropollutants without interference from organic and inorganic compounds under the environmental background. As a result, the Co-doped Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 achieves almost 99.3% sulfamethoxazole degradation in 3 min with a k-value as high as 82.95 min −1 M −1 , which is superior to the existing catalysts reported so far. This work provides a structural regulation of the active sites approach to control the catalytic function, which will guide the rational design of Fenton-like catalysts.

The development of economical, efficient, and robust electrocatalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly imperative for the rapid advancement of renewable H 2 energy-associated technologies. Extensive utilization of the heterointerface effect can endow the catalysts with remarkably boosted electrocatalytic performance due to the modified electronic state of active sites. Herein, we demonstrate deliberate crafting of CoP/CoO heterojunction porous nanotubes (abbreviated as CoP/CoO PNTs hereafter) using a self-sacrificial template-engaged strategy. Precise control over the Kirkendall diffusion process of the presynthesized cobalt-aspartic acid complex nanowires is indispensable for the formation of CoP/CoO heterostructures. The topochemical transformation strategy of the reactive templates enables uniform and maximized construction of CoP/CoO heterojunctions throughout all the porous nanotubes. The establishment of CoP/ CoO heterojunctions could considerably modify the electronic configuration of the active sites and also improve the electric conductivity, which endows the resultant CoP/CoO PNTs with enhanced intrinsic activity. Simultaneously, the hollow and porous nanotube architectures allow sufficient accessibility of exterior/interior surfaces and molecular permeability, drastically promoting the reaction kinetics.
