SummaryPlants endure challenging environments in which they are constantly threatened by diverse pathogens. The soil‐borne fungus Verticillium dahliae is a devastating pathogen affecting many plant species including cotton, in which it significantly reduces crop yield and fiber quality. Melatonin involvement in plant immunity to pathogens has been reported, but the mechanisms of melatonin‐induced plant resistance are unclear. In this study, the role of melatonin in enhancing cotton resistance to V. dahliae was investigated. At the transcriptome level, exogenous melatonin increased the expression of genes in phenylpropanoid, mevalonate (MVA), and gossypol pathways after V. dahliae inoculation. As a result, lignin and gossypol, the products of these metabolic pathways, significantly increased. Silencing the serotonin N‐acetyltransferase 1 (GhSNAT1) and caffeic acid O‐methyltransferase (GhCOMT) melatonin biosynthesis genes compromised cotton resistance, with reduced lignin and gossypol levels after V. dahliae inoculation. Exogenous melatonin pre‐treatment prior to V. dahliae inoculation restored the level of cotton resistance reduced by the above gene silencing effects. Melatonin levels were higher in resistant cotton cultivars than in susceptible cultivars after V. dahliae inoculation. The findings indicate that melatonin affects lignin and gossypol synthesis genes in phenylpropanoid, MVA, and gossypol pathways, thereby enhancing cotton resistance to V. dahliae.
Assessing the psychological effects on children and adolescents of suffering atopic dermatitis (AD) is essential, when planning successful management. This study aimed to systematically review the literature regarding risk of mental disorders in children and adolescents with, or without, AD; and to explore confounders. We identified potentially relevant studies from EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ERIC, the British Nursing Index, the Family and Society Studies Worldwide, the Social Work Abstracts, and the Sociological Abstracts from inception to Sep 30, 2018. Investigators independently screened titles and abstracts, and then full-texts. Investigators independently extracted data from included studies. Meta-analyses using random-effects models were performed, reporting odds ratios (ORs; 95% CIs). Thirty-seven studies ( n = 2,068,911 children/ adolescents) were included. Meta-analysis of 35 studies found that children and adolescents with AD had significantly higher risk of total mental disorders than those without AD (OR = 1.652; 95% CI, 1.463–1.864). There was no significant difference in risks for ADHD (OR = 1.563; 95% CI, 1.382–1.769); sleep disorders (OR = 2.100; 95% CI, 1.322–3.336); anxiety (OR = 1.339; 95% CI, 1.062–1.687); depression (OR = 1.402 95% CI, 1.256–1.565); conduct disorder (OR = 1.494 95% CI, 1.230–1.815); or ASD (OR = 2.574; 95% CI, 1.469–4.510; Q b = 8.344, p = 0.138). Race/ethnicity of child, target of comparison, type of studies, representativeness of the sample, measures of AD and mental disorders were significant moderators for total mental disorders. Integrated, holistic, multidisciplinary management of pediatric AD is significantly important, which emphasizes the well-being of the whole person.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) imposes significant physical and psychosocial burdens on affected children. However, little has been done to learn from the subjective experiences, perspectives and emotions of children living with AD. Their voices are not heard in healthcare settings. This study aims to share these children's voices and provide a deep understanding of the subjective experiences of children living with AD. We conducted qualitative research by conducting semi‐structured interviews and analysing the drawings of 17 children in Hong Kong aged between 8 and 12 years who were diagnosed with AD. Using a phenomenological approach, we transcribed, coded and described the interviews. We found that for the children in this study, living with AD meant contending with an accumulation of challenges and crises. At the individual level, the essential experience of living with AD manifested a vicious cycle of skin and mental issues. At the family level, conflicts between children and parents concerning AD management coexisted with parental support. The children commonly experienced bullying and isolation in school and discrimination and stigmatisation in their neighbourhood, thereby making living with AD a traumatic experience. The synergy between individual and environmental factors contributed to shaping an incapable and wounded “self” living with AD. Based on our findings, we propose a child‐centred biopsychosocial framework for understanding the living experiences of children with AD. This study suggests different practice strategies for healthcare professionals working with the individual challenges experienced by children living with AD and the challenges these children experience in their family, school, and neighbourhood. The needs of these children should be addressed through an integrated, holistic approach for improving their long‐term health outcomes.
Objective: A 100 million children in China are affected by internal migration, a result of the growing demand for human labor due to economic growth. Whether moving to urban cities with their parents or being left behind in rural areas, these children are vulnerable to victimization. The meta-analysis presented in this study is the first to synthesize the rates of victimization among children affected by internal migration. Method: Studies providing data published before May 2016 on the prevalence of child victimization among 105,415 Chinese subjects aged 0-17 years were identified through eight English and Chinese databases. Two reviewers independently extracted data to generate summary effect sizes using a random effects meta-analytic model. A priori subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate heterogeneity and bias in these studies. Results: Our meta-analysis of 31 studies showed that children affected by internal migration, both migrant children and left-behind children, are at a higher risk of victimization in comparison to their unaffected counterparts (odds ratio [OR] ¼ 1.492, p < .01), especially in their vulnerability to unintentional injuries (OR ¼ 1.683, p < .01) and neglect (OR ¼ 1.398, p < .01). These children are at a higher risk of being unintentionally injured from the ages of 6 to 11 years (OR ¼ 1.644, p < .01). The highest victimization rate observed in this study was found in the central districts of China (OR ¼ 1.599, p < .01). Conclusion: This study reveals the high prevalence of victimization among both migrant children and left-behind children. The increasing number of children affected by internal migration deserves continuous academic and policy attention.
Background: Gossypol is a specific secondary metabolite in Gossypium species. It not only plays a critical role in development and self-protection of cotton plants, but also can be used as important anti-cancer and male contraceptive compound. However, due to the toxicity of gossypol for human beings and monogastric animals, the consumption of cottonseeds was limited. To date, little is known about the gossypol metabolism in cotton plants. Results: In this study, we found that cotyledon was the primary source of gossypol at the seed germination stage. But thereafter, it was mainly originated from developing roots. Grafting between glanded and glandless cotton as well as sunflower rootstocks and cotton scion revealed that gossypol was mainly synthesized in the root systems of cotton plants. And both glanded and glandless cotton roots had the ability of gossypol biosynthesis. But the pigment glands, the main storage of gossypol, had indirect effects on gossypol biosynthesis. In vitro culture of root and rootless seedling confirmed the strong gossypol biosynthesis ability in root system and the relatively weak gossypol biosynthesis ability in other organs of the seedling. Expression profiling of the key genes involved in the gossypol biosynthetic pathway also supported the root as the major organ of gossypol biosynthesis. Conclusions: Our study provide evidence that the cotton root system is the major source of gossypol in both glanded and glandless cottons, while other organs have a relatively weak ability to synthesize gossypol. Gossypol biosynthesis is not directed related to the expression of pigment glands, but the presence of pigment glands is essential for gossypol accumulation. These findings can not only clarify the complex regulation network of gossypol metabolism, but it could also accelerate the crop breeding process with enhanced commercial values.
Main conclusion A comprehensive account of the LBD gene family of Gossypium was provided in this work. Expression analysis and functional characterization revealed that LBD genes might play different roles in G. hirsutum and G. barbadense.
