Background Receiving preoperative information is a right of all parents whose children are admitted for surgery. Information for parents can help to prepare children and lessen anxiety for both parent and child. Aim This study aims to assess the preoperative information needs of parents. Methods This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. A non-probability convenience sampling technique was used to select 100 parents whose children, aged between 0 and 18 years, were admitted for surgery. The Parents Desire for Information scale was used to collect the data, which were then analysed using descriptive statistics. Results The majority of the sample indicated that it is essential to receive preoperative information. The aspects of preoperative information rated as essential were as follows: need for the surgery; duration of hospitalisation; informed consent; fasting time; investigations; medications; physical preparations; dress code for the child; waiting time and place; parental involvement in the operating theatre/recovery/ward; pain management; post-operative care including eating, drinking, ambulation, wound care, discharge instructions and follow up. The majority (60%) of the parents said that they prefer to receive verbal instructions. The majority (63%) of the study participants said that it was the doctors who provided the information, and of these, 70% rated the information received as good. Conclusions The present study concludes that parents of children undergoing surgery welcome comprehensive preoperative information.

Background Students studying at a university of health sciences may have different perceptions regarding illness and treatment. Moreover, as they have access to healthcare, it may influence their health-seeking behavior. It is important to identify the health-seeking behavior of the students and to guide them accordingly. Methods The present study was designed to assess the health-seeking behavior of undergraduate students. It was a cross-sectional descriptive study. A total of 236 students pursuing undergraduate courses in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and physiotherapy participated in the study. Checklist and perception scales were used to collect data that were then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results Use of the Internet to get information about illness, treatment, and medications (60.3%; 139), self-investigations (50.6%; 122) as well as self-medication practices (54.4%; 130) was commonly seen in students. Among the self-medications, antibiotics (63.7%; 152), antipyretics (45.6%; 109), analgesics (43.9%; 104), and cough syrup (48.9%; 116) were common. Regarding perception on health-seeking behavior, the majority (49.3%; 118) opined neutral for the statement that self-diagnosis is not wrong, (49.4%; 120) reported that over-the-counter medications can be taken, (66.5%; 157) agreed that keeping healthy by eating healthy can keep you away from the hospital. The barriers for health-seeking behavior, stigma, fear of confidentiality issues, fear of unwanted intervention, and unaware where to seek help were more commonly reported for mental healthcare-seeking behavior (odds ratio [OR]: 29.33, 23.18, 34.16, and 11.96, respectively), whereas issues relating to high cost, the long waiting hour in healthcare facility, and fear of side effects were reported for physical healthcare-seeking (OR: 9.80, 7.15, and 18.66, respectively) behavior. Conclusion Self-investigation, self-medications, and use of the Internet to seek healthcare information are evident among students of university. Students exhibited different health-seeking behavior for physical and mental illnesses. Barriers to health-seeking also differed. Institutions should use this information for the effective usage of healthcare services by students.

Introduction: Sibling rivalry is a common problem faced by the parents in rearing their children. It usually starts after the birth of a second child. Sibling rivalry affects both children and parents. Parents play an important role in managing sibling rivalry in children. Therefore it is essential for the parents to have knowledge regarding sibling rivalry. Objectives: A study was carried out to determine the knowledge regarding sibling rivalry in children among mothers and to find the association between the knowledge scores with the selected demographic variables of mothers. Materials and method: A descriptive survey approach was used to assess the knowledge of mothers regarding sibling rivalry in a selected hospital of Mangaluru. Non probability purposive sampling technique was used to select 100 mothers. Data was gathered using the structured knowledge questionnaire on sibling rivalry. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The study result showed that 50% of mothers had inadequate knowledge and remaining 50% had moderately adequate knowledge regarding sibling rivalry. There was no significant association found between the knowledge scores and the selected demographic variables of the mothers. Conclusion: The study concluded that half of the study sample had inadequate knowledge and the other half had moderately adequate knowledge on sibling rivalry.

Background Play is an integral part of a child's life that could be effectively implemented for hospitalized children as well. It plays an important role in alleviating the psychological burden and enhancing self-efficacy of children undergoing surgery. Children benefit from play or games because they enjoy learning through them. The present study aims to assess the effectiveness of game-based learning on anxiety and postoperative self-efficacy among children undergoing surgery. Materials and Methods Using nonprobability purposive sampling technique, 80 school-age children undergoing surgery were selected. Children in the interventional group received game-based learning, whereas those in the control group received routine care. A numeric 0 to 10 state anxiety scale and a self-efficacy scale were used for assessing anxiety and postoperative self-efficacy of children. The obtained data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results Mann–Whitney U test showed significant difference (p < 0.05) between the mean pre- and posttests scores of anxiety in intervention group. Comparison of posttests anxiety scores between the groups also showed a statistical significance (p < 0.05). When compared self-efficacy scores within intervention and control groups, Wilcoxon signed-rank test value was significant (p < 0.05). Whereas between groups comparison the Mann–Whitney U test value was significant (p < 0.05) at 24 and 48 hours after surgery. Conclusion The study concluded that game-based learning is effective in maintaining adequate postoperative self-efficacy and reducing the anxiety among the children undergoing surgery.
