RESUMOEste estudo apresenta uma reflexão acerca do percurso histórico que engendrou a construção dos sistemas de proteção social, em particular a proteção social brasileira, e as transformações em curso que vem alterando os padrões da sociedade fundados no trabalho assalariado. As características desse momento histórico engendraram o nascimento de uma nova configuração da classe operária a qual, condicionada pelas modalidades de organização e gestão do trabalho, está impossibilitada de criar novas formas de enfrentar o conflito capital e trabalho a partir de uma lógica de proteção social pautada na noção de direitos sociais. Destaca-se, ainda, que a amplitude ou o reducionismo dos sistemas de proteção social vinculam-se aos padrões de intervenção do Estado e à organização dos trabalhadores. O interesse do Serviço Social neste tema está imantado pelo compromisso de participar ativamente na luta pela construção do processo democrático.
