O presente artigo pretende analisar o conto oral intitulado O Afilhado do Diabo, coligido na coletânea Contos Tradicionais do Brasil (2001), por Câmara Cascudo. Inicialmente, apresenta-se uma discussão acerca da importância da Tradição Oral e da Performance Poética e como estas reelaboram as experiências, vivências e os modos de vida a partir dos estudos teóricos de Paul Zumthor (1985), Gyslane Matos (2005), Hampâté Bâ (1985), entre outros. Em seguida, aponta-se aspectos intrínsecos à cultura popular, levando em consideração o conto como um dispositivo operante que, por meio de um viés crítico, instaura um espaço de tensão, engendrando uma reflexão crítica da realidade. Por fim, propõe-se uma análise da narrativa cujas conclusões apontam para o fato de que a palavra poética, em seu processo de recriação, volta-se fundamentalmente para interioridade do ser humano, permitindo que a linguagem adquira novas significações ao expressar a realidade por formas abstratas e simbólicas.
