Background: Physiotherapy rehabilitation improves patients’ activity in daily life and helps them return to work. Physiotherapy rehabilitation for COVID-19 patients mainly focuses on respiratory and functional rehabilitation assessment. This research project aims to assess the knowledge of COVID-19 and awareness of physiotherapy rehabilitation for COVID-19 patients among clinical physiotherapy students and the relationship between these variables. Methods: A preliminary, cross-sectional study was conducted on 159 clinical physiotherapy students from various education backgrounds. A three-part questionnaire assessing socio-demographic variables, knowledge of COVID-19 and awareness of physiotherapy rehabilitation for COVID-19 patients was distributed among clinical students from major physiotherapy programmes at tertiary institutions. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests and Spearman correlation tests were used for data analysis. Results: Most of the respondents (95.6%) were categorised as having an above average knowledge on COVID-19. Eighty-seven respondents (54.7%) were categorised as having an above average awareness of physiotherapy rehabilitation for COVID-19 patients. The knowledge of COVID-19 was positively correlated with awareness of physiotherapy rehabilitation (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This research study showed that the knowledge of COVID-19 and awareness level of physiotherapy rehabilitation in COVID-19 patients was above average among clinical physiotherapy students. The association between knowledge of COVID-19 and awareness of physiotherapy rehabilitation among clinical physiotherapy students had a weak positive correlation.
Title: Effect of hip abductors and lateral rotators strengthening exercises on knee valgus alignment among adolescents: A prospective study. Objective: The objective is to study the effect of hip abductors and lateral rotators strengthening exercises on improving the knee valgus alignment among adolescents. Background: In accordance to the well known fact that knee dysfunction condition among growing adolescents contributes to a wider segment of entire orthopedic practice, it is therefore essential to aware of the effect of strengthening the hip muscles on correcting functional knee valgus problem. So, we conducted this study to find out the effect of strengthening hip abductors and lateral rotators exercises on functional knee valgus among healthy adolescents. Subjects: 30 subjects (25 females and 5 males) aged between 18 to 20 years old. Method: The subjects were assigned to hip abductor and lateral rotator strengthening exercises 3 times per week for 6 weeks. Knee valgus alignment was assessed at baseline and post-intervention.
Background and Objectives: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a lifestyle disease that affects 463 million of adults worldwide. In Malaysia, DM especially Type 2 DM (T2DM) has an alarming increasing trend. Physiotherapy has been demonstrated to be effective in preventing and managing T2DM. Hence, a Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) survey is conducted to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and current practices of Malaysian physiotherapists in preventing and managing Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Malaysian physiotherapists were recruited to answer a KAP survey. The survey contained 44 items in four domains: demographics and education, attitudes and beliefs, current practices, and knowledge of diabetes. A descriptive analysis was completed for all the response variables from the survey. Results: 297 practicing physiotherapists in Malaysia predominantly from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were recruited. The participants generally had a moderate knowledge in T2DM care, in which a lack of hypoglycaemia management knowledge was noticed. A great proportion of respondents was not confident in key aspects T2DM care. Even though 76.73% of respondents agreed that T2DM fall under physiotherapy scope of practice, only 55.22% provided counselling on T2DM prevention and management. A lack in practice of blood glucose testing and monitoring was also noticed in most of the respondents. A discrepancy between respondents’ self-efficacy and knowledge was observed, in which a proportion of respondents were confident in providing T2DM care but lacked the relevant knowledge. Conclusion: This study identified gaps in knowledge, attitude and practice on T2DM care by Malaysian Physiotherapists. Measures to close the gaps are therefore recommended.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic forcing the students to stay at home to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which inevitably affects their mental and physical health. Thus, the evaluation of mental health (MH), physical activity (PA) and Sedentary Behaviour (SB) of Health Science students during COVID-19 is a need. Objective: To evaluate the physical activity level, mental health and sedentary behaviour of Health Science students in UTAR during COVID-19 and find the correlation among them. Method: 258 health science students were participated in this study via social media, like Facebook and WhatsApp, The Depression, anxiety, stress scale-21 (DASS-21) was used to assess mental health and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to assess physical activity levels and sedentary behaviour. Result: There were 34.89%, 55.04% and 25.58% of Health Science students were suffering moderate to extremely severe level of depression, anxiety and stress, respectively. Females had a higher prevalence in anxiety (F:55.49%, M: 53.95%) and stress (F:26.37%, M:23.69%), while depression more prevalent in males (M:42.81%, F: 31.87%). The Chinese Medicine students had the poorest mental health and this followed by Physiotherapy, M.B.B.S and Nursing students. Besides, the prevalence of physical inactivity was 48.99%, which a higher prevalence in females (51.43%) than males (43.10%). Besides, 39.53% of Chinese Medicine Students, 62% of M.B.B.S students, 55.56% of Nursing students and 44.83% of Physiotherapy students were categorized as physical inactivity. The prevalence of sedentary behaviour was 48.10% in Health Science students. Besides, no significant correlation found between physical activity and mental health, and sedentary behaviour and mental health. A weak negative correlation was found between physical activity and sedentary behaviour. Conclusion: The prevalence of Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Physical Inactivity and Sedentary Behaviour during the pandemic was very alarming. From government to institution, adequate and regular surveillance, policy monitoring and further research should be taken.
