Cancer awareness is the key to early detection and better health-seeking behaviour. Cancer is quite common in both developing as well as developed countries, but awareness is yet poor among the general population. Poor awareness may lead to poor uptake of screening modalities and delay in diagnosis. One factor that has been consistently shown to be associated with late diagnosis and treatment is a delay in seeking help for cancer-like symptoms. This paper reviews the literature on cancer awareness among the general population and attitude towards screening modalities. The poor awareness level among the Indian population shows the need for health education and sensitisation regarding cancer and its different aspects. This will be helpful in the successful implementation of health programmes related to cancer.
Background: India has adopted MDA strategy for elimination of lymphatic filariasis since 2004. It requires constant efforts on a nationwide scale particularly in the endemic areas for interruption of transmission of this neglected tropical disease. Aims & Objectives: This study aims to assess the coverage and compliance along with factors affecting compliance regarding MDA implementation in Nayagarh district of Odisha. Material & Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in November 2016 for evaluation of filariasis elimination activities carried out in the district. A pre-designed, pre-tested semi-structured interview schedule as per National Vector Borne Disease control Programme (NVBDCP) guidelines was used. A qualitative component was added to determine the perceptions and attitudes of the study population regarding MDA implementation. Data was analysed using simple proportion and percentages. Results: A total 120 households (90 rural and 30 urban) were surveyed, covering a population of 590. Overall coverage rate of study population was found to be 91.47%. The effective coverage rate was 71.1% (77.8% in rural areas and 48.8% in urban areas). The overall coverage compliance gap was 22.2, being higher in urban than rural areas. Conclusion: There is a felt need for health education activities to increase acceptance among the population coupled with supervised on the spot consumption of DEC for decreasing the coverage compliance gap. The issues regarding compliance need to be addressed for realizing the global target of eliminating lymphatic filariasis by 2020.
Background: Accurate assessment of gestational age is pivotal to give quality maternity care. Ultrasonographic fetal biometry is the most widespread method used to establish GA. Sonographic biometric parameters commonly used are Crown rump Length (CRL), Biparietal diameter (BPD), Head circumference (HC), Abdominal circumference (AC) and Femur length (FL). Fetal Kidney Length (FKL) is one of nontraditional parameter and more accurate method of GA estimation than BPD, FL, HC and AC after 24th week of gestation. This study evaluates role of FKL in estimation of GA and compared its accuracy with other established biometric indices. Methods: Present study is a cross sectional study and includes healthy women who were certain of their LMP with prior regular menstrual cycles with uncomplicated pregnancy between 20 weeks of gestation to term. Maximum length of anyone single fetal kidney is measured from upper pole to lower pole at least thrice and mean of the measurements was taken. The data has been analyzed in SPSS-21 version and Microsoft word, excel have been used to generate graphs, tables etc. Results: Linear regression equation showed kidney length could predict gestational age with an accuracy ±9.048 days and predictability when combined with other biometric indices was ±8.299 days. Conclusions: The study shows good correlation between gestational age derived from FKL and gestational age from established biometric indices like BPD, HC, AC, and FL.FKL can be combined with the other four biometric indices to give a fair estimation of gestational age.
Adolescence is a period that is characterized by growth and development rapidly. They have only limited knowledge regarding sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Adolescents girls are more marginalized and face many problems in society. Owing to a lack of knowledge on SRH, they succumb to various situations such as unhealthy menstrual hygiene practices, unwanted sex, teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortions, reproductive tract infections (RTIs), and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as HIV/AIDS. These have adverse effects on their mental health. This article reviews the literature to explore the knowledge, attitude, practices, and life skills regarding SRH among adolescent girls. Need for the inclusion of SRH and life skill education for adolescents in schools, strengthening health care programs, and involvement of various Non-Governmental organizations (NGO for adolescent wellbeing. A Search of relevant publications between 2011 and 2020 was done through multiple electronic databases such as MEDLINE, PUBMED, and Google scholar. A manual search on world health statistics, national programs regarding SRH was done.
