Aim: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a common cause of hearing impairment, especially in rural population. This study was carried out to know about the bacterial fl ora and antibiotic sensitivity for better management of the disease and to reduce morbidity due to CSOM. Materials and Methods: This study was undertaken in a tertiary care center of western UP with an aim to study the bacterial fl ora and their sensitivity to a series of antibiotics in cases of CSOM (unsafe) with active purulent discharge. There was no history of topical or systemic antibiotic therapy in these patients in the last 3 months. Aural swabs were taken and cultured for aerobic bacteria. For cases showing growth on culture media, sensitivity for a series of antibiotics was studied to have an understanding of the antibiotics showing sensitivity and resistance. Results: A total of 62 (mean age 17.38 years) diagnosed cases of CSOM unsafe were included in the study. The study group included 38 males (61.29%) and 24 (38.71%) females. Fifty-four patients (87.09%) had unilateral diseases, while 8 patients (12.90%) had bilateral diseases. 94.28% of the ears showed growth on culture media. Majority of these ears showed monomicrobial growth (90.90%). Conclusion: The most common bacteria isolated in descending order were Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, Proteus, and Escherichia coli. Majority of the patients showed sensitivity to cefoperazone and salbactum (90.69%), ofl oxacin (79.06%), and ciprofl oxacin (79.06%). 95.35% of the patients showed resistance to amoxicillin.
Human cysticercosis is an infection by the larval stage of the tapeworm. We encountered a rare case of isolated cysticercosis of sternocleidomastoid muscle in a 25 year old female. She presented with 2.5 9 1.5 cm firm, dull aching swelling with ill defined margins in right upper part of neck. It appeared to arise in sternocleidomastoid muscle. The diagnosis was established by FNAC, USG and CT scan. Patient was admitted and started on medical treatment. There was complete resolution of symptoms and patient improved to normal after 1 month of therapy with albendazole. The case is reported because it is a rare one and to reinforce the fact that parasitic etiology should be kept in mind while dealing with a case of neck swelling.
Different types of polydactylies and other hand malformations are commonly seen. Here, we describe a very unusual type of hand malformation characterised by campto-polydactyly with totally disorganised configuration of digits. The role of possible genes involved in development of hands and digits is discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
