The bacterial storage polymer poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) has the potential to be used as an alternative anti-infective strategy for aquaculture rearing. In this research, the effects of (partially) replacing the feed of European sea bass juveniles with PHB were investigated. During a 6-week trial period, the PHB showed the ability to act as an energy source for the fish. This indicated that PHB was degraded and used during gastrointestinal passage. The gut pH decreased from 7.7 to 7.2 suggesting that the presence of PHB in the gut led to the increased production of (short-chain fatty) acids. The diets supplemented with 2% and 5% PHB (w/w) induced a gain of the initial fish weight with a factor 2.4 and 2.7, respectively, relative to a factor 2.2 in the normal feed treatment. Simultaneously, these treatments showed the highest bacterial range-weighted richness in the fish intestine. Based on molecular analysis, higher dietary PHB levels induced larger changes in the bacterial community composition. From our results, it seems that PHB can have a beneficial effect on fish growth performance and that the intestinal bacterial community structure may be closely related to this phenomenon.

Starved and fed carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to sublethal waterborne copper exposure (1 microM) for 28 d in softened Antwerp, Belgium, city tap water. Copper accumulation in liver and gill tissues was determined, and changes in branchial Na+/K+-adenosine 5'-triphosphatase (ATPase) activity and metallothionein (MT) induction in gill and liver tissues were investigated following 28-d copper exposure. Gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity in exposed fish, both starved and fed, was at its lowest values after 3 d of exposure, after which it slowly recovered to preexposure values. No significant differences in branchial Na+/K+-ATPase activity were found between starved and fed fish. Copper accumulation in the liver and gills of the exposed starved carp was significantly higher than that in the exposed fed carp. The highest MT induction was found in liver tissues. Different patterns of MT induction were observed in the starved and fed carp during copper exposure. Before exposure, MT concentrations in the livers of the starved fish were significantly higher than those in the fed ones. Copper exposure significantly increased MT concentration in the liver of the fed fish, but no changes occurred in the starved fish. In contrast, copper exposure increased MT concentrations in the gills of the starved fish during the first week of exposure, whereas only a slight increase in MT concentration in the gills of the fed fish was observed. When taking into account the role of feeding status in MT induction, hepatic MT was a more relevant indicator for long-term monitoring of copper pollution in carp, but gill MT provided useful information regarding short-term copper toxicity.

Toxicity imposed by organophosphate pesticides to the freshwater cultivable fish species mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) was assessed under laboratory conditions. Healthy juveniles were exposed to chlorpyrifos, dichlorvos, and their equitoxic mixture in geometric series. Median lethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos were found to be 0.906 (0.689–1.179), 0.527 (0.433–0.633), 0.435 (0.366–0.517) and 0.380 (0.319–0.450) mg/L and dichlorvos were found to be 38.432 (33.625–47.866), 22.477 (19.047–26.646), 12.442 (9.619–14.196) and 11.367 (9.496–13.536) mg/L after 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h of exposure respectively. Surprisingly, the joint toxicity of these organophosphates in the binary mixture was less than additive during most of the exposure periods. Behavioral changes exhibited by pesticide exposed fish were elevated opercular beatings, loss of equilibrium, loss of schooling behavior, aggregating at corners of the test chamber, slight color changes, surplus mucus secretion, and sudden and rapid body movements before death. Such behavioral studies can be applied as a non-invasive bio-monitoring tool for water quality assessment for fish growth and development. Despite the same mode of action of both pesticides, the antagonistic action in the binary mixture is an interesting outcome of this research that requires further investigation for a lucid understanding of the joint toxicity mechanism of such pesticides.
