Currently, the hawk moth fauna (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) of Zanzibar (Unguja) Island (Tanzania) is poorly known. The body of available literature contains records of eight species only. In this study, we present the checklist of 21 hawk moth species from Zanzibar, 13 of which are recorded for the first time.
In this study, we describe Laothoe amurensis zolotuhini Spitsyn, Bolotov & Spitsyna ssp. nov. from Kunashir Island. The range of this subspecies expands through South Kuriles and Japan. The new subspecies differs from the nominate one by having a strongly toothed outer margin of the wings. The uncorrected COI p-distance between L. amurensis zolotuhini ssp. nov. and the nominate subspecies is 2.12-2.45%.
Arctia matronula (Linnaeus, 1758) has three subspecies. The nominotypical subspecies is widespread from France to the Russian Far East, China and Korea; Arctia matronula sachalinensis (Draudt, 1931) is known from Sakhalin Island; Arctia matronula helena (Dubatolov & Kishida, 2004) is distributed in Kunashir Island and Japan. In this paper, we present the revision of subspecies of Arctia matronula, provide the first COI barcode data for insular subspecies, confirm the validity of A. m. helena, and consider A. m. sachalinensis syn. nov. as a synonym of the nominotypical subspecies.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
