Platelet aggregation studies were done in 10 cases of diabetes with and without retínopathy and 7 cases of hypertensive retínopathy with adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and adrenaline (ADR). It was observed that the rate and degree of aggregation was significantly increased in the retínopathy group both with ADP and ADR. A significant alteration in the latent period was found with ADP, whereas no such change was found with ADR. It is proposed that the increased platelet reactivity in retinal microangiopathy could be due to different mechanisms. Increased sensitivity of the platelets to ADP resulting in the rapid inductive phase of aggregation together with accelerated intrinsic ADP release in diabetic retínopathy may cause hyperaggregation of platelets. Hyperaggregation in hypertensive retínopathy, however, may occur due to accelerated ADP release only. Platelet metabolism supporting the release reaction is altered in both.
Summary: Candida albicans was grown in Sabouraud's dextrose liquid medium alone and with decadron®*, terramycin®** and both. Decadron® was incorporated in the strengths of 0.01, 0.05 and 0.1 % and terramycin® in 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5% strengths. Dry weight and pH values of the growths obtained were determined. The maximum increase in values occured when C. albicans was grown with decadron and terramycin together. The increase with decadron® or terramycin® individually or in combination was proportional to the increase in the concentration of the additives and was statistically significant when compared to the respective controls. The lesions in rabbit cornea were more severe with treated than untreated Candida.
Abstract. The authors of previous studies on the role of photocoagulation for central serous chorioretinopathy (CSR) have based their deductions on the premise that a Snellen visual acuity of 6/6 is the end point of recovery. It is now known that patients with a visual acuity of 6/6 may have defective contrast sensitivity indicative of a visual function deficit. The present study was a prospective, controlled, and randomized evaluation of patients suffering from their first attack of CSR, in which contrast sensitivity was used to determine the effectiveness of argon laser photocoagulation as compared with more conservative treatment. Although long-term studies are necessary, the results of this study showed that while photocoagulation increases the rate of recovery for visual acuity, it is also linked with significant loss and slower recovery of contrast sensitivity. The effect of aspirin n vitro and in vivo on platelet aggregation has been studied in 13 diabetic subjects without retinopathy, 16 diabetic subjects with retinopathy and 20 age- and sex-matched control subjects. The rate, degree and duration of collagen-induced aggregation were greater in the diabetic patients (p less than 0.05; p less than 0.01; p less than 0.05). The residual aggregation in vivo was greater in all diabetic patients with aspirin, whilst it only occurred in vitro in patients without retinopathy. A decreased latent period was seen in diabetic patients, to a greater extent in those with retinopathy. Significant differences in the rate, degree and duration of arachidonic acid-induced-aggregation were also seen in patients with retinopathy treated with aspirin (p less than 0.05; p less than 0.01; p less than 0.05). Disaggregation only occurred with aspirin in vitro and was more frequently seen in normal subjects.
Bilateral branch retinal vein occlusion is a relatively rare occurrence. We report 4 patients who presented with bilateral branch retinal vein occlusion and in each of these cases the fellow eyes were involved within 6 months of the initial episode. The patients were relatively young and all of them had associated essential hypertension. The patients maintained a relatively good visual acuity through a 6-months to 1-year follow-up. This report highlights this rare entity, the associated risk factors and visual prognosis.
