Au Bas Moyen Âge et à l’époque moderne, l’étude de la nomination est indissociable d’une étude du parrainage. Cet article vise à préciser leurs fonctions sociales respectives en Bretagne au xv e et xvi e siècle et à rechercher qui, du nom ou du parrain, détermine l’autre. L’institution du parrainage était un élément constitutif de la sociabilité communautaire. En contrepartie d’une honorabilité proclamée aux yeux de tous, le parrain avait le devoir implicite de porter assistance à son filleul et à son compère en cas de besoin. La transmission du nom au filleul était le signe de cet engagement mais, pour les parents, ce nom pouvait aussi être une marque d’honneur envers un saint particulier qui devenait de facto redevable d’une assistance similaire à l’égard du nouveau-né. L’évolution des besoins de solidarité et de la croyance en la puissance déterminante des noms explique celle des pratiques nominatives.
