Essai sur l'imagination constituante, Paris, Seuil, 1983. 1 C'est un fait bien connu : les universités, pour le pouvoir en place, sont des lieux de subversion, plus encore depuis l'année 1968, qui a vu une révolte mondiale de la jeunesse estudiantine exigeant l'édification d'un monde nouveau. Loin de servir le désir des puissants en construisant une histoire officielle, elles s'immiscent dans la critique des structures institutionnelles, attirant sur elles la méfiance, la vindicte et la surveillance, car elles ne devraient pas instiller dans le public le poison antipatriote de la prise de distance avec le pouvoir, quel que soit son arbitraire. C'est ce que rappelle une délégation de l'Université de Paris en janvier 1791 à l'Assemblée des députés de la Constituante. Menacée dans ses fondements même, puisqu'elle est une institution plutôt conservatrice de l'Ancien Régime, la Sorbonne vient défendre au contraire son statut de force prérévolutionnaire. Elle ne manque pas de rappeler le paradoxe éducatif de la monarchie au sein de laquelle une jeunesse privilégiée entendait parler, par ses maîtres, des auteurs grecs, des libertés et du patriotisme qu'ils professaient alors que, dès la sortie des cours, ces étudiants rejoignaient le monde réel de la « tyrannie 1 ». Comment, dans ces conditions, ne pas considérer la part active que prit l'Université à la destruction de la royauté absolue ? Ce simple rappel insiste sur une des vérités parfois oubliés dans le feu de l'action révolutionnaire, mais que le débat parlementaire permet de retrouver. Les hommes qui ont déclenché la Révolution durant l'été 1789 et l'ont poursuivie ont été le plus souvent des hommes formés sous la monarchie, ayant reçu une éducation classique, fondée sur la lecture des auteurs grecs et latins.
