The purpose of this research is to study the influence of surface pollution on the radiative properties of rolled steel sheets and its influence on the thermal treatment. The surface pollution resulting from rolling operations is a mixture of oils and thin particles of iron and is similar to a semitransparent medium. This residual film modifies the infrared absorption of the iron sheet and its heating kinetics during its thermal treatment within the continuous annealing furnace. We developed a sensor to continuously measure on-line the radiative properties of polluted steel sheets. This sensor uses infrared reflection to measure the total absorptivity of the steel sheet at the entry of the continuous annealing furnace. We have tested the feasibility to measure the level of iron particles with this technique and we present an example of measurements.
