L'analyse de la faune malacologique de quatre sondages réalisés dans le marais poitevin permet de décrire la succession des paléobiotopes littoraux depuis environ 7000 BP au cours de la transgression flandrienne.
La montée du niveau marin est clairement observée à Maillezais (extrémité orientale du golfe du Poitou). La mer recouvre un biotope terrestre et palustre permettant le développement d'un peuplement lagunaire (avant 6830 BP et jusqu'à 6010 BP). Puis s'installent des peuplements intertidaux de moyen à haut estran (jusqu'à 2630 BP) suite à l'élévation du niveau marin Enfin, apparaissent des peuplements terrestres situés à proximité des plus hautes mers (2630 à 1160 BP), le comblement se poursuivant et, vraisemblablement, en liaison avec un court épisode régressif ou la fermeture du golfe du Poitou par des cordons dunaires.
A Charron et Pied-Lizet (extrémité occidentale du golfe du Poitou) se succèdent des peuplements infralittoraux subtidaux de substrats rocheux et meubles (avant 4320 BP), puis des peuplements intertidaux de bas, moyen (jusqu'à 1890 BP) et haut estran (jusqu'à environ 1350 BP) et enfin, depuis 1350 BP, un peuplement dulcicole et terrestre.
Certains mollusques intertidaux de biotopes rocheux (Patella sp , Littorina littorea) et meubles (Venerupis decussata, Scrobicularia plana) ont été collectés et utilisés par l'homme notamment au Néolithique.
