Devant la gravité des dommages occasionnés aux pessières du sud du Massif Central (Lozère, Haute-Loire) par la propagation naturelle de Dendroctonus micans et compte tenu de l ' urgence des problèmes de lutte directe et d'aménagement forestier qui en découlent, il nous est apparu indispensable d'effectuer au plus tôt la revue bibliographique des recherches déjà effectuées à son sujet. 115 R.F .F. CARLE Tous ces auteurs s'accordent pour reconnaître chez Dendroctonus micans l'existence de caractéristiques biologiques particulières ayant trait à son caractère de ravageur primaire, au mode de vie grégaire de ses larves, aux chevauchements de son cycle évolutif, à son défaut d'essaimage en masse, etc. Notre analyse des principaux aspects biologiques de ce ravageur se bornera, pour l'essentiel, à préciser sa spécificité et son aire de dispersion, l'historique de ses gradations et leurs dommages, son cycle biologique, les conditions favorisant ses attaques, les principaux facteurs de résistance du milieu et les méthodes utilisées pour le combattre. SPECIFICITE ET AIRE DE DISPERSION Spécificité botanique Ce Scolytide, assez peu spécifique, préfère cependant les conifères du genre Epicéa : épicéa commun (Picea excelsa Link), épicéa de Sitka (Picea sitchensis Carr .), sapinette d'Orient (Picea orienta/is Carr .), épinette blanche (Picea a/ba Link), Picea pungens Engelm ., etc. Plus sporadiquement ses attaques sont signalées sur mélèze (Larix decidua Mill .), sapin (Ables a/ba Mill .), pin sylvestre (Pinus sylvestris L .), pin de montagne (Pinus uncinata Ramond) et Pinus contorta Dougl. Bien qu'en Europe l'épicéa commun soit l'hôte le plus courant,le Dendroctone, lorsque le choix est possible, témoigne d'une préférence très nette pour l'épicéa de Sitka. Aire de dispersion Originaire de la Sibérie selon Schedl (1932), donc initialement inconnu en Europe, Dendroctonus micans Kug. s'est répandu depuis une centaine d'années de façon telle que Balachowsky (1949) et Blunck (1954) lui ont attribué une aire de dispersion couvrant à cette époque toute l'aire, naturelle ou non, du genre Picea (Picea exce/sa Link, Picea sitchensis Carr ., Picea orienta/is Carr ., Picea jezoensis Carr ., etc .) depuis la Sibérie et le Japon jusqu'à la côte atlantique.
