<i>Homonota rupícola</i> es un gecko recientemente asignado a la Familia Phyllodactylidae (Gamble et al., 2011) que constituye uno de los pocos reptiles endémicos de Paraguay (Cacciali et al., 2011). Esta especie, junto con <i>Homonota borelli, H. taragiú y H. uruguayensis</i>, se encuentra en el grupo de <i>H. borelli</i>, siendo <i>H. rupícola</i> una de las especies evolutivamente más recientes (Morando et al., 2014). La especie fue descrita en base a cuatro ejemplares, todos provenientes del Cerro Pedregal (25º31 '07"S, 57º02' 53"0) en el límite entre los Departamentos de Cordillera y Paraguarí (Cacciali et al., 2007) (Fig. 1). Entre los caracteres diagnósticos de <i>Homonota rupícola</i> se destaca la presencia de escamas dorsales quilladas alternadas con escamas granulares yuxtapuestas, coloración formada por manchas irregulares grises, blancas y negras, y escamas homogéneas en los lados de la cabeza.
